    LOWELL -- A three-alarm fire that broke out at 31 Auburn St. just before 4 p.m. on Thursday all but destroyed the two-story building, located in a congested area near the Lowell Superior Court.

    Fire officials had yet to determine the cause, and no injuries were reported. However, a woman was seen being taken away from the scene on a stretcher to an nearby ambulance down the street.

    Firefighters worked feverishly to douse the flames, which shot from the attic roof of the two-story building. Companies from Billerica and Chelmsford were called in to assist and at one point officials sounded an alarm, signaling firefighters as many as a dozen firefighters to evacuate the building, moments before the chimney and part of the back roof caved in to the building.
